Do i get my deposit back if i didnt give a 30 day notice even though my 6 month contract was up?

i rented an apartment for a little over 6 months and payed $240 deposit my contract was 6 months and i still gave my landlord a 2 week notice before leaving but he insists that since i didn't tell him i was moving out 30 days ahead of time that he doesn't owe me anything. is this right or should i get my deposit back?
