What is the best soil to use for my pet garden snails?

I don't want soil with ticks and mites, but I want it to be close as their habitat as possible. I don't want to spend any money on it either. What kind of soil should I use? Also I want to know how to get rid of tics and mites if they get on my snails. Can anyone help?
